The history of the Maria Regina Lyttelton parish

The foundation stone of the church was laid on 10 October 1956. Prior to this, mass was held in the home of Mr and Mrs Dawes on Main Road (now called Botha Avenue).

Fr. John Magennis, who stayed at the Cathedral before moving to Lyttelton, was Parish Priest for almost ten years. The presbytery was extended from time to time to accommodate catechism classes and then, in 1984, the parish hall was built. In 1998, the entire house was renovated.

The Church has recently undergone major repairs to the roof and the electrical system; the Sanctuary has been altered to fit in with liturgical requirements; the floor has been re-tiled, and the building has been repainted together with the outside of all the other buildings.

We pray that all of these improvements help all parishioners to worship God our Father in an even deeper way.

In February 1998, the Archdiocese purchased the Dutch Reformed (NG) Church building in Monavoni and it became St Thomas More Catholic Church. After Easter 1999, Mgr Vincent Hill took over as Parish Priest there, making it the second parish in the Centurion area.
